SAORI is a contemporary hand-weaving program founded in 1968 in Japan by Misao Jo. Through Saori, everyone can express himself or herself freely, regardless of age, gender, disability or intellectual aptitude. SAORI places more importance on free expression and creativity than it does on technical skills or regularity of the woven cloth. No two weavers are alike, so it is very natural that every single cloth, freely woven by people with different personalities, is beautiful in a different way.
SAORI was first introduced overseas at the first VSA festival held in Washington D.C., and has since been welcomed in 40 countries.
VSA Arts of Hawaii-Pacific is a proud support of the SAORI weaving program. The VSA Artsplace holds daily weaving classes using SAORI looms and encourages its students to increase their self-employment income by selling woven art.
